The Team
Kim Ernstrom is a 25+ year veteran of wildland fire management. Kim received her Masters Degree in Earth Science at Montana State University in 1999 completing a thesis on the “Fire effects of the 1988 fires on headwater stream systems in Yellowstone National Park”. She worked in eight different states throughout her career in positions with the US Forest Service, the National Park Service, the US Fish and Wildlife Service and the Nature Conservancy. After starting as a wildland firefighter in Wyoming in 1993 and a helicopter rappeller in Idaho, Kim spent 8 years in the Southeast as coordinator at the Prescribed Fire Training Center (PFTC), Foreman with the Asheville Hotshots, Prescribed Fire Specialist at Big Cypress National Preserve and Fire Management Officer at the Florida Panther National Wildlife Refuge. For the last 15 years Kim worked for the National Park Service in Boise, Idaho at the National Interagency Fire Center providing expertise in fuels management planning applications, fire behavior analysis, training and wildland fire decision support tools. She most recently was one of the technical experts and leads for training for the Interagency Fuel Treatment Decision Support System (IFTDSS) that has become widely popular among fuels planning specialists across the country and throughout fire management. Fuels management planning, prescribed fire and teaching are her passion but Kim also is often assigned as a Long Term Fire Behavior Analyst (LTAN) on wildland fires and enjoys working with Incident Management Teams across the country during fire season. Kim has served as a fire behavior expert on wildfire reviews, facilitated learning analyses, litigation cases and investigations and is constantly seeking opportunities to continue learning as a lifelong student of fire.
